imported post My 83 did this if left sitting over a couple days. Blue smoke for a minute then cleared up. The flat four design just seems to promote the issue and I just chalked it up to being normal and rode the darn thing. imported post my 1100 will smoke on start-up sometimes, even with new valve guide seals. i think i have a float valve that lets a little gas wash into the cylinder sometimes. imported post Hay Moffat read 86 GL1200 A Aspencade Smokes On Start Up topic and that may help you if it smells like oil buring, if not try shutting off the petcock to prevent fuel seeping. L8r Larry imported post thats typical for the 1100 to smoke for a moment hen clear on start up. imported post Tilt your bike to the right and let the oil drain out of the left cylinders after you stop riding for the takes about 30 seconds of leaning bike to the right. Using 10-40 oil in your climate is a little too much except in the summer,30 weight oil would be better. imported post When you put the rings in did you stagger the end gap on the rings? imported post dunno what break in procedure you folks may follow get it wrong in aviation ..and you can end up with "Getting it Done One of the big factors in the break-in is the hone job done by the manufacturer/cylinder shop. If it's too rough, it will wear rings too quickly and increase oil consumption. Too fine a finish will stop the process prematurely and leave you with low compression and mediocre oil consumption. This is out of your control, however, so we'll talk mostly about the thing you can control the run in. The key to this process is to do it reasonably quickly and with moderately high power. If it's done too quickly the cylinder walls will gall and ruin the rings; too slowly and the rings will anneal and glaze the cylinder walls. Either one of these problems will require removal of the cylinders and a cylinder re-hone, and installation of new rings - possibly even new pistons. The secret to break-in, if it can be called that, is this allowing the rings to wear on the cylinder walls without getting them too hot. Some pilots don't understand the importance of the ring temperature factor and will glaze the cylinders every time. The rings are made of tempered steel that's affected by temperature. The higher the temperature of the ring, the less time required to anneal or remove the "spring" from the metal. When the ring anneals, it loses its ability to exert pressure against the cylinder wall. This inhibits the transfer of heat to the cylinder, causing the ring to retain heat and anneal further, thereby aggravating the situation. " See less See more imported post Thanks for the assistance. The smoke is not tyhe usual Gl1100 puff at start up as it is quite a lot. Yes I made sure that the ring gaps where staggerered and that the cyliders nwhere honed properly and run in sensibly for 450 miles. The smoke is now worse and I have removed each plug lead in turn to see which cylinder is burning oil. It seems as though its the number 4 cylinder as the smoke deminishes when running on three. I have tried turning off the fuel valve and also leaning ith machine to the right. SO off comes the head AGAIN next week for inspection and bores assessed. The pressure in the cylinders is still 175 PSI. imported post I used to work on air cooled VWs a lot and have seen cases of the ring end gaps moving around and lining up at the top of the bore before the rings seated, that will cause a lot of oil smoke. They will always try to move up in a horizontal engine but usually they will seat before they get lined up. imported post Thanks for the help. I have been reading the GL1200 smoking topic as well which is I strip the engine down AGAIN I am experimenting with different grade natural oils not synthetic or semi synthetic oils and today drained the 10-40 oil and put in 20-50 to see if it made a difference to the smoke. It certainly did as it made it 1000% worse! I drained that off put in 10-40 and lo and behold no smoke at start up????? I left it for a few hours and then the same old problem of smoke from the left hand then ran it with the no 4 plug disconneted which reduced the smoke then reconnected 4 and disconnected 3 which gave the same amount of smoke. I am going to try 5-30 and let you know what happens. The design of these bikes is interesting as the left hand cylinders are lubricated via a small hole in the connecting rods which gets its oil supply from the main crank big end bearing whixh has a hole in it to allow oil feed. The right hand cylinders have the oil passage way in the connecting rods but the big end bearing has no hole itso no oil goes onto the cylinders this way and the cylinders are lubricated by oil splacsh from is a HONDA design and is pointed out well inn the maintenance manual. So I can see residual oil leaking into the left hand pair of cylinders via this route if the bike is on its side stand but mine smokes even if its on the centre stand. Will keep you posted See less See more imported post Rings move. No matter where you place them, they will move, seen that on every motor we ever put on the dyno. The oil ring does most of the oil control, the second ring does the rest. Hastings did some tests on 4" bore and found there was no issue from extra ring gap until they hit around .080 or .090. Cylinider finish needs to be made for the ring being used, different rings require different finishes. I don't suppose you have any idea what the RVK, RPK, and PK numbers are on the hone job do you? God Bless Tom See less See more imported post I leant the bike to the right overnight and it smokes more than before on start up so as the valve seals guides are a suspect I will take the head off again and have the valves/guides/seals checked by another engineer to double check on me. Then its bore inspection and if necessary engine out and rings matched to the honing process by a specialist. Well it should keep me out of the pub for a while but its got to be right!!! If I take the engine out again this time I'll have it painted professionally then laquared with two pack to stop the spilt petrol eating away at the paint job I did last time did not laquar after painting! Many thanks assistance its good to know I am not alone. See less See more imported post Head is off and in the machine shop for new guides and valves/seals. After this is done at least I will have eliminated the head as the problem.
